# DEM Import

> This page documents the **DEM import** in **Cinema 4D**. It loads Digital Elevation Model terrain data as geometry — a direct way to bring real-world landscapes into a scene; export is not supported.

## General

- Cinema 4D does not support the DEM-SDTS format.
- The VistaPro DEM format (binary) is supported.
- Files to be imported need to have the extension '.DEM' because the file itself contains no information about its origin. DEM files without this filename extension cannot be read by ­Cinema 4D.

DEM files are often used for landscapes. This file format can only be imported.
