It converts smooth value ranges into discrete steps — terraced falloffs and stepped patterns from any continuous Field. ![Image: 041730.jpg](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/Resources/Images/041730.jpg)\ A continuous range of values becomes a few discrete output values. This modifier layer is used to convert the 0%-100% value range into constant value ranges. If an underlying layer only specifies 40%, for example, 2 steps will not be enough and you will have to increase the number of steps. You can find an example quantization scene [here](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/html/OESHADER.html.md) with the shader effector. # Example A spherical field with a linear falloff in value is quantized: [Video: 2026-0_quantize_field_01_.mp4](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/Resources/Images/2026-0_quantize_field_01_.mp4)
