# Delay

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page documents the **Delay layer** in **Cinema 4D**'s Field system. It smooths Field changes over time so effects follow with inertia — the temporal easing counterpart to the Decay layer.

An effect that runs from left to right with two different delay modes.

The Delay Layer influences the temporal course of changes (due to fields/modifier layer arranged in the field list in front of it; which also includes color changes, for example) and can therefore also have an effect outside a field influence area. This makes it similar to the [Decay Layer](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/html/FLDECAY.html.md), although a few special effects are integrated here - such as the spring effect.

# Example

Here, 2 Delay field layers act on the animation generated by a linear field. The *Spring* **Mode** is used in the foreground and the *Smooth* **Mode** in the background.
