# Formula

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page describes the **Formula layer** in **Cinema 4D**'s Field system. It modifies the values of underlying layers through mathematical expressions with built-in variables — exact procedural control inside the Field stack.

The Formula Layer is ideal for the mathematicians among our users, who can use formulas to modify values defined by other Layers.

A series of default variables can be used (Field tab, Variables menu). More information about how to work with formula values can be found [here](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/html/6193.html.md).

A Formula Layer with the formula **sin(id/count\*180)** affects a Squash Deformer, which in turn squashes a Star spline.
