# Index Array From String

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page documents the **Index Array From String node** of the Scene Nodes system in **Cinema 4D**. It builds an integer array from a typed list of values — the quick way to hand-pick component indices for selections.

There are some situations where you may only want to store a few values in an array. Consider, for example, the selection of just a few points, edges or polygons of which you know the indices. For these purposes, the corresponding values can simply be written in a text field separated by commas or dashes and the Node automatically generates an array from this. You can connect this directly to **Selection** inputs, for example, in order to apply modeling commands only to individual elements of a geometry.\
The different requirements, e.g. for a point or polygon selection on the one hand and an edge selection on the other, can also be taken into account automatically.

Whenever individual arrays are required, e.g. to create a selection, the Index Array from String Node is a good choice. Here you can also work with abbreviations, such as a hyphen, to output contiguous indices as arrays.
