# Basic Noise

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page documents the **Basic Noise node** of the classic node materials in **Cinema 4D**. It generates the familiar noise patterns of the Noise shader as grayscales — the all-purpose source for surface variation and bump effects.

In conjunction with the Basic Node, mathematical noise patterns can be created, e.g., that can be used as a relief or simulating a surface roughness.

This Node can be used to create various noise patterns as grayscales that, for example., can be used directly as a relief effect. The available patterns and options are closely related to those of the Noise shader in the standard Material System. If you require additional settings, a separate Noise Node can be used.
