# Vertex Map

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page describes the **Vertex Map node** of the classic node materials in **Cinema 4D**. It reads Vertex Map tag weights into the material — painted or field-driven masks directly controlling shading.

Comparable to the use of [Vertex Colors](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/html/NET_MAXON_PATTERN_NODE_GENERATOR_VERTEXCOLOR.html.md), vertex maps can also be read within Node Materials. The principle remains the same, except that vertex maps themselves cannot store colors, only floating point values between 0 and 1, and therefore may need to be colored manually as in this example.

> **Tip:** Note:
>
> This Node is only available when editing a classic Cinema 4D Node Material.

If your object has a Vertex Map tag, this Node can be used to read its color values.
