# Vertex Map Tag

> **Note:** **What is it about?**
>
> This page covers the **Vertex Map tag** in **Cinema 4D**. It stores a weight from 0 to 1 per point — painted or driven by Fields — and precisely limits where deformers, materials or simulations take effect on a mesh.

Vertex Maps (also known as "point weighting") store a value between 0 and 1 for each point of an object. It can also be controlled by fields.

Weightings can be painted on with the [Paint Tool](https://help.maxon.net/c4d/en-us/Content/html/TOOLCAPAINT.html.md).

Vertex Maps are almost indispensable for working with deformation objects, for example. This allows you to precisely define the effective range for such an object. For example, a Twist object can only twist the head of a figure and not the rest of the body.

# Example

In the following examples, you can see various applications of Vertex Maps. Clockwise starting from top left control Vertex Maps:

1. the tear pattern of a simulated Cloth Tag.
2. the particle velocity,
3. the material covering power.
4. the deformer effect.
