Modifier Wheel

The ZBrush for iPad Modifier Wheel offers essential keyboard shortcuts commonly used with various tools and canvas actions.

User Settings > Modifier Wheel (default Action Icons)

Ctrl/Cmd, Alt/Option, Shift, and Space Bar modifiers and their functions are interchangeable between ZBrush for iPad and ZBrush desktop.

Modifier shortcuts are commonly used with sculptural, selection, masking, clipping, slice, and other related brush types. Learn more in the following guide sections:

1. Shift

Activates the Smooth brush, which is commonly used with other modifiers to apply actions within the canvas.

When you press Shift, the brush cursor changes color to blue, indicating the smooth brush is active.


2. Ctrl/Command

Activates masking brushes, commonly used in combination with other modifiers to apply canvas actions.

When you press Ctrl/Cmd, the brush cursor changes color to yellow, indicating the masking brush is active.


3. Alt/Option

This is commonly used to activate additive or subtractive brush capabilities, including in combination with other modifiers to apply brush actions.

4. Space Bar

Press to display the customizable Quick Menu that offers default shortcuts to essential features for sculpting and painting.



Adjust Modifier Wheel Position

While holding the Shift modifier, tap the menu arrows to slide to the left or right.

Quick Menu position customization stores during the active session. However, when you restart ZBrush, Quick Menu returns to default center position.

Quick Menu customization not supported in the free version of ZBrush for iPad.

Adjust Modifier Wheel Size

With one finger on the center handle, use a second finger to drag away from the center to make the wheel larger or drag toward the center to make it smaller. Shown below are the minimum (left) and maximum (right) sizes.


Rotate Modifier Wheel

With one finger on the center handle, use a second finger to drag in a circular motion around the wheel. The buttons rotate to follow your finger.


Modifier Wheel Actions

Quick Steps:

1. Press and hold a modifier to activate it.

Shift Modifier Pressed

With no modifiers pressed, the cursor is red, indicating a sculpting or painting brush is active.

When the Shift modifier is pressed, the cursor is blue, indicating a Smooth Brush is active.



2. With a modifier pressed, drag your finger to a connecting/adjacent modifier to multi-select.

When Shift + Ctrl/Cmd modifiers are pressed, the cursor is white, indicating a Selection/Curve Brush is active.



3. Move the Modifier Wheel around the screen by dragging the handle in the center.



Modifier Wheel Settings

Modifier Wheel settings are stored to ZBrush preferences and retained after a restart.


Wheel Size

Offers Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large, 2XL, and 3XL options.


Icon Set

Offers Action Icons, Key Icons, and Key Labels each with unique display graphics for modifier keys.


Modifier Wheel shortcuts remove the need for iPad keyboard support.
