Brush Stroke

These stroke types define how your sculpting and painting brush applies to the mesh. Below, find essential descriptions on each stroke type.

Dots & Freehand

For each Strokes brush, the tip is defined by the stroke Modifiers settings listed below. Each brush offers a default Spacing setting to create a smooth stroke.

Default Spacing settings cannot be changed for Strokes.

Dots spacing = 0.2

FreeHand Spacing = 0.75

Pro Tip:

You can customize the Stroke's spacing by turning on Lazy Mouse and increasing the lazy stepping.

DragRect

Draws a brush shape with a drag-and-release stroke. This is commonly used with alphas to apply stamps onto the surface.

ZAdd - Drag on the model to draw an additive brush shape.

ZSub - Drag on the model to draw a subtractive brush shape that carves into the surface.

The surface height of the drawn brush tip shape is defined by the ZAdd and ZSub intensity values. A higher intensity value draws a stronger shape that either grows out from the surface or cuts into the surface.

Experimenting with different combinations of alpha, Draw Size, and ZAdd/ZSub intensity levels offers a wide variety of customization options.

Color Spray & Spray

These two Stroke types splatter the model with semi-random copies of the brush tip, which includes any selected alphas and textures assigned to the brush.

The difference between these two Strokes lies in their Modifiers slider settings.

Color Spray outputs the selected color along with a wider spectrum of colors added to the brush's output.

Spray outputs the selected color along with saturated variations of the selected color.

Adjust the Color slider in Strokes > Modifiers to boost the amount of color variation for each Spray stroke.

These strokes do not automatically apply color when selected. The RGB channel must be active for the Color modifier to colorize the FreeHand and Dots Strokes.

DragDot

Applies an instance of the brush tip to the model by dragging on the model and releasing.

This is a handy Stroke to use when you want to apply a single instance of the alpha. DragDot offers the ability to move the stamp around the model before placing it.

DragStamp

Can be applied by dragging and releasing to apply a brush tip shape. DragStamp offers and additional depth effect when dragging a finger or pencil horizontally or vertically across the screen.

With an alpha selected, dragging away from the starting stroke on the surface draws the alpha shape while also growing the alpha shape outward from the model's surface.
