Selection Brush Essentials

Use selection brushes to hide and show parts of the surface.

Use Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers to activate and apply selection brushes. These modifiers can also select Polygroups assigned to the model. Learn more in this guide's Polygroups Essentials section.

Learn the basics for using this guide's Modifier Wheel section.

Choosing Selection Brushes

There are two ways to choose a selection brush.

1. Select it in the Brush library.

Selecting from the library sets the chosen selection brush as the new default.

After selection, hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers to activate and use the selection brush.

2. Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers, tap the Brushes icon in the left canvas toolbar, and open the "selection" category to choose a selection brush.

This method is handy for switching selection brushes and settings while holding Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers.

Change Selection Stroke Type

Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers, tap the Strokes menu, and choose a desired stroke type.

The left canvas toolbar menu covers the left side of the screen, which may result in the Modifier Wheel being covered during this process. Drag the Modifier Wheel handle into the center to reposition, or drag the menu handle at the top to move the menu horizontally across the screen to reposition as desired.

Strokes settings reset to default upon restarting.

Using Selection Brushes

Selection brushes are not sculpting brushes. Rather, they are a brush type that lets you draw a selection over parts of the model to hide and show geometry for a selected subtool.

Additive Selection:

1. Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers and draw a green selection over the surface.

Once the selection window is drawn, release the modifier keys while pencil or touch pressure is held on the screen.

2. With pressure held on the screen to retain the selection, hold the Spacebar modifier and drag to move the selection around the screen.

3. Release pencil or touch pressure from the screen to apply the selection.

Any portion of the surface within the green selection is additive, leaving the selected surfaces visible.

Subtractive Selection:

1. Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers and draw a green selection over the surface.

2. With pressure held on screen to retain the selection, release Ctrl/Cmd + Shift and hold Alt/Option to activate a subtractive selection.

3. Release pencil or touch pressure from the screen to apply the selection.

Any portion of the surface within the red selection is hidden from view.

Selection brushes work with symmetry. The Symmetry option is active by default. Disable Symmetry in the right canvas toolbar to apply asymmetrical selections.

Reverse a Selection:

1. Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift modifiers.

2. Draw a selection within the empty canvas space around the model.

3. Release pressure from the screen to reverse the visible selection.

Where the drawn selection in step 2 is drawn over part of the model's surface, a new selection will be made.

Restore All Visibility:

Hold Ctrl/Cmd + Shift and tap the canvas to restore model visibility.

The SelectLasso brush has a secondary feature that hides edge loops when tapping a single edge from the loop. To Restore All Visibility, we recommend tapping on the canvas as opposed to the model's surface.

Reset Selection Brushes

Selection brushes can be reset from the Brushes options.

The Reset All Brushes button applies to sculptural, selection, and masking brushes.
