Trapcode Particular

Project Migration from Earlier Versions

We are very happy to announce that Particular 5 is backwards compatible with projects brought over from earlier versions. Click the orange ‘Migrate Settings’ to get the process started.

For steps to migrate all instances of Particular with a single command, see our Particular Bulk Migration FAQ .

Because there are some intrinsic differences in how things like Physics work in Particular 5, there are some items that may need tweaking to make them look like they did before. Things worth checking if you run into differences:

Grid and Layer Emitters

Because Grid and Layer Grid emitters no longer exist as an Emitter Type in Particular 6, their properties have moved to the Distribution group. Old projects with Grid and Layer Grid emitters will migrate to the new implementation.

Migration notes from previous versions:

Air Resistance

Because Air Resistance is now an intrinsic property of the Particle Physics, you may find you need to turn this down to have it react as it often did before when Air Resistance was set to zero. This property also interacts with Air Density, see below for more info.

Secondary systems with non-default Air Resistance values will cancel Particle Type inheritance after migration. For instance, If a secondary system had no Particle Type block and was inheriting particle characteristics, but also had a non-default value for Air Resistance, after migration, a Particle Type block gets created in order to honor the Air Resistance, but this overrides any inheritance that would have happened for other particle parameters. Previously inherited parameters will instead be copied to the secondary system

Air Density

Air Density is a new Environment control that determines how heavy or dense the air surrounding the particles is. By default, it gets set to 1.0. This means if particles have a non-zero amount of Air Resistance, eventually they start to slow down as their air resistance builds up against the density of the air.

To recreate faster movement through the air, you can turn this all the way down to zero.

Gravity

Gravity is now responsive to the Mass and Air Resistance of the particles as set in the Particle Physics category. If it is not affecting all your systems as you remember it doing so, you may want to dial it up or down, or change those particle physics on the individual systems.

Shadowlets

Shadowlets are handled more accurately now, but you may find you get different results than previously and want to adjust Shadowlet Opacity, Adjust Size, or Adjust Distance to match a previous look. The softness for the default Shadowlet shape can also be dialed in now. You may need to change this to get your desired result.

Simulation Samples

Increase Simulation Samples/frame in Global Controls if seeing jagged lines during any paths in motion.
