Moves by Maxon
Introduction
- Download the app from the iOS App store.
- Or view the App Store from your browser.
- Requires iOS 15.0 or later.
- Body Capture requires a device with the A13 chip set.
- Object Capture requires at lease Cinema 4D R25 and Mac (M1 machine or Intel-based with AMD graphics card min. 4 GB VRAM and 16 GB RAM) with MacOS 12 (Monterey) or higher.
- When starting the App for the first time, log in using your Maxon User Account.
Moves by Maxon makes use of the front facing True Depth camera, in the iPhoneX (and higher) and iPad Pro (2018), to capture your face structure, facial movement, images and also your voice. It requires access to the front facing camera and microphone.
This data is stored locally on your iPhone within the App itself. You can manage your captures and transfer them to Cinema 4D.
The data can be deleted from your device at any time . The data is not transmitted anywhere else, other than to Cinema 4D, which is completely under your control. When the data is sent to Cinema 4D it is stored in a folder of your choosing, and the data can be deleted at any time.
What can you do with the capture data?
The following can be done using the various capture data:
-
Face captures can be used to place your own face in a 3D scene, which will move according to your facial expressions. The images made by the camera will be projected onto a face mesh..
-
With body captures you can move your entire body in front of the camera and the movements will be recorded and transferred onto a skeleton arranged in a Body Capture object.
-
You can photograph individual objects from all sides and Cinema 4D will use this information to calculate a complete 3D object, including texture. A similar functionality is already available in the Motion Tracker reconstruction , only that Moves by Maxon is easier to use and produces better results most of the time.

Saving Face Capture Scenes for Playback
As soon as you open a Capture file in Cinema 4D, a Face or Body Capture object will be created that contains the interpreted Capture data that will be saved with the Cinema 4D file.
The images, on the other hand, that the Moves Face Shader uses will continue to be gotten from the original Capture folder, which can cause problems when passing the scene file to other users, who cannot access the Capture folder or your hard drive.
Proceed as follows when sharing the scene file or passing it to other users:
- Save your scene file in a new folder
- Click on the Face Capture object's Save Capture File to Project Directory button
A new folder will be created in the directory named MaxonCapture in which you will find the following files:
- One or more image files
- Sound files (if present)
- Preview .jpg
This scene file folder is now complete and can be sent to other users who can then also use the Capture scene.
Saving Scenes for Sharing
At the time of opening or merging a capture into C4D, a face or body capture generator is created and contains the parsed capture data which will from now on be persisted with the object when saving the C4D scene file.
That said, face capture image will keep being pulled from the original capture folder location, preventing users from sharing the C4D scene file with other users who will not have access to that capture folder on your local hard drive.
The best method to save your scene file for sharing is as following:
▪ save your C4D scene into a new folder
▪ click the "Copy Capture Files to Project Folder" from the Face Capture object generator
After this, the project folder will contain a new "MaxonCapture" folder that will contain:
▪ image file(s)
▪ sound file (if any)
▪ preview.jpg file
This scene file folder can now be considered "self-contained" and can be given to other users who will be able to replicate the capture behavior on their machines.
Opening the Same Scenes Multiple Times
If you open a scene as described above multiple times, a dialog window will be opened the 2nd time the scene is opened which will ask if you want to open the scene using the same name and title.
You should confirm with Yes, otherwise the face texture will not be applied.
