Thin Film

A thin film of lye or oil can be used refract the light on a surface and lead to a colored shimmer. The effect is known, for example, from soap bubbles. By varying the simulated thickness of the oil layer, additional color play can be created. In this example, a multiplied base noise is used to created this variation.

When light is refracted in a very thin layer of oil, soap, etc., it is reflected within this layer and light interference occurs. Since light consists of different wavelengths, some wavelengths cancel each other out (destructive interference) and/or amplify each other (constructive interference).

Depending on the layer thickness, the refractive index and the viewing angle, this effect becomes visible together with its characteristic colors.
