Filename

If you've imported a Volume sequence, a path (always absolute) will automatically be defined in this field. A new path to an OpenVDB sequence file can be defined at any time. This doesn't have to be the first file in the sequence but can be any file within the sequence.

Reload

Since Volumes saved in external files can change, clicking on this button will update the Volumes in your scene.

Volume Grids

This list displays all Volume Grids in the scene. They can be disabled or enabled here.

Scale

This factor can be found at numerous locations throughout Cinema 4D when importing or exporting foreign formats. Therefore, don’t be surprised if the term ,export’ is used if this factor is seen in an import function (this factor is explained as a whole here).

This factor lets you scale files upon import/export, i.e., practically all relevant numerical values saved in the file or those to be saved will be multiplied by this factor and then saved - or interpreted when loaded.

The unit at the right in turn defines how upon

  • Import the numerical value saved in the file is converted to the current Cinema 4D unit. Example: if an X value of 1 is saved in the file and you define Feet, the X value will be converted to 30.48 cm in Cinema 4D (if centimeters are defined by default in Cinema 4D).
  • Export numerical values are saved in the file. Example: an X value is set to 100 cm in Cinema 4D. If you define Feet for export, the exported file will save a numerical value of 3.281 (1 meter = 3.281 feet).

Use Animation

Frame[0..2147483647]

Enable this option if you want to play the Volume sequence in the Viewport. If this option is disabled, only the defined Frame will be loaded.

Map Name To Frame

Normally, animated *.vdb files start with the digits "000", "001”, “002”.... This already defines the animation range. If this option is enabled, the individual *.vdb files will be assigned to the corresponding animation frame according to their respective numbering. This is, of course, only noticeable if the numbering starts with "046" instead of "000", for example. The animation will then start at frame 46 if this option is enabled.

If this option is disabled, the animation start and end can be defined manually with the following settings.

From[0..2147483647]

To[0..2147483647]

Here you can enter a range for the Volume sequence which will begin at frame 0 in the Cinema 4D Timeline. Otherwise the the first frame number will automatically be used when the sequence is loaded.

Offset[-2147483648..2147483647]

Enter the frame in Cinema 4D at which the Volume sequence should start to play.

Loop

Enable or disable looping for the frame ranged defined using the settings above.

Speed[0..+∞%]

This setting can be used to adjust the animation speed. A value of 0.5 will double the speed and a value of 2 will halve the speed. In this example, the 2nd Volume is omitted or a single Volume will be held for over 2 frames.

Cache Memory Limit (gb)[-∞..+∞]

The first time a Volume Shader animation is played, all data will be loaded from the files on the hard drive to the cache - to the maximum amount possible. Depending on the file size this can be a slow process. The next time the animation is played, the files will be gotten from the cache, which means that it will play much more smoothly.

*.vdb files can be very large and since filling the cache completely is rarely recommended - the entire system can be bogged down - you can restrict the GB that can be loaded. If the limit is exceeded, the oldest files will be removed from the cache.

The Cache Size shows how much memory is taken up by the Volume Shader.
