Cache

Cache Location

Here you have the option of choosing where the cache data should be saved:

  • External: The cache data is saved in .vdb format and can therefore also be loaded in other projects or e.g., on other volume generators if required.
  • Internal: This is the way older Cinema 4D versions work. The cache data is saved within the scene and also stored together with it.

Path

If you are using Cache LocationExternal, the corresponding file to be used can be defined here. To do this, click on the folder icon to the right of the Path field and then select the .vdb file with the cache data in the file dialog that pops up.
If no external cache file has been calculated yet, click on the Cache button below the Path field and select the desired storage path in the file dialog that pops up. This is then automatically transferred to the Path field.

Animation

From[-2147483648..2147483647]

To[-2147483648..2147483647]

Clicking on the Bake or Refresh button initially only bakes the current animation image.

If elements in the list of the volume generator are animated, the cache layer can only function correctly for all images if you bake the entire animation. In such a case, activate Animation, set the animation duration in animation images at From/to and only then press the Bake/Update button. Outside of this set duration, everything is always recalculated live.

Cache

Refresh

This button changes its name depending on whether you have already baked (Refresh) or not (Bake). If you change any of the objects involved, these changes are not automatically transferred to the cache level. You must then first click on Refresh.

Clear

Use this to delete the content of the cache level; it will then be calculated live again.

If a cache level already exists as an internal data set, this can be saved as a .vdb file. A corresponding file dialog opens in which you can enter the name and storage location of this data. The internal data will be deleted.

ID_VOLUMECACHELAYER_BUTTON_Move_Internal.flsnp

If an external cache file has been entered under Path, its content can be transferred to the scene data and thus converted to an internal cache. The corresponding entry in the Path field is removed. In addition, a dialog appears which can also be used to delete the external cache file.

Info

Here you can find some information about the filled cache level: namely the type of the internally stored volume and its voxel size. If the voxel size displayed here differs from the voxel size of the volume generator defined above, it is converted live (i.e., "resampled"). Clicking on Refresh would synchronize the voxel sizes (which is actually always advisable).
