What should you do if your object is too coarse to enable a fine drape?

With the settings on these pages, you can subdivide your object in the same way as with the Subdivide (Catmull-Clark) command.

A cushion with few polygons is subdivided into one with many polygons.

In this way, you can quickly turn this rather coarse cushion into a highly polygonal object that can be easily worked with the Fabric Brush to create fine folds.

If you realize in the course of your work that you need more precise, smaller details than the current resolution provides, you can quickly subdivide further at any time without changing the tool.

Mode

Here you have the choice of 2 subdivision algorithms that are already known from the Subdivision Surface object (see Type OpenSubdiv Loop). In brief:

  • Quads: this common method divides exclusively into squares and should be used if your mesh consists mainly of squares. If you are using a subdivision surface to render the fabric, set this to "Catmull-Clark".
  • Triangles: this mode subdivides into triangles. Use this mode if your object is triangulated, i.e. consists of triangles. If you are using a Subdivision Surface to render the fabric, set this to "(OpenSubdiv) Loop".

Subdivisions[1..2147483647]

Subdivisions only has an effect if Smooth Subdivision is deactivated. This allows you to define how often each individual edge should be cut (see also Iterations below).

Smooth Subdivision

Activate this option if the object is to be subdivided according to the rules of the Subdivision Surfaces. The object shapes are smoothed, as shown here for the subdivision surface object, for example: Subdivision Viewport.

If this option is deactivated, the system divides without smoothing.

Iterations[1..2147483647]

Here you define how often each polygon is divided and smoothed. Be careful, as the number of polygons increases exponentially with each step.

In general, it can be said that textiles in particular do not require too much subdivision to achieve a credible-looking drape. Remember that the fabric object can and usually should be subordinated to a subdivision surface. This divides and smoothes non-destructively!

Angle[0..180°]

This is the maximum angle that surfaces may have to each other in order to maintain a hard edge.
If the angle is smaller than the value specified here, it is rounded:

When smoothly subdividing a sphere, an angle limit can preserve edges. Center small, right large value for Angle.
