Delta Mush

Delta Mush is a deformer that is used to smooth the results of a mesh that is affected by another deformer placed in front of it. The object is mainly intended for use with characters and Skin Deformers, but can also be used with any object or deformation object. In contrast to the Smoothing deformer, the Delta Mush deformer is best suited for maintaining the maximum level of detail of the respective object.

The Delta Mush object can be used like any other deformation object. It is also provided as a Tag and can be used to adjust multiple objects that are affected by the same deformer and/or to fix the deformer to specific points using Vertex Maps. This can be very helpful, for example, to limit the smoothing of a character's elbows or knees without removing detail from other areas of the mesh: e.g. in the shoulder or hip areas where weighting is often difficult.

Since this object calculates the amount of smoothing based on the original amount of deformation of each point, smoothing works in conjunction with joint weighting and Skin deformers, making the weighting process easier in general.

On the left, the Delta Mush deformer was applied to smooth the wrist area (original condition shown on the right). Note that the areas of the geometry that are not deformed by joints (e.g. the fingers) are not smoothed in order to preserve details there. To achieve a comparable result with joints alone would require much more effort than is the case with the Delta Mush deformer.

Example

Even in simple cases such as a deformed cylinder, Delta Mush produces good results:
